Discover Ireland’s Only Blackcurrant Farm with the Jeffares Family!
Discover the workings of a blackcurrant farm as 4th generation farmer and specialist grower Des Jeffares and his two golden retrievers Molly and Sofie (don’t worry they are very friendly) take you on a tour of the farm. The Jeffares family have been growing blackcurrants on the farm since 1955 and today the farm is Ireland’s only remaining commercial blackcurrant farm. You will hear the fascinating life cycle of the blackcurrant super fruit, see the hedgehog piles, the bird boxes and wildlife habitats that all contribute to biodiversity and sustainable production. Hear how these rich Irish berries became interwoven in the lives of so many local people to become embedded in Wexford’s cultural history.
Side by side with the Blackcurrants you’ll hear about Ballykelly Sport Horses’s performance breeding programme and see beautiful mares and foals destined for a future in the sport of eventing, showing or showjumping as they graze the rich green pasture.
A carrot will also be welcomed by Tom and Sooty, the farm’s two lovable donkeys.
On returning to the farmyard, you will enjoy a delicious blackcurrant cocktail (non-alcoholic) before leaving this beautiful quiet Irish farm.
